ANZAC Day 2020
The 2020 ANZAC Day coincided with a hard COVID lockdown in Brisbane. The RSL, having been forced to cancel the traditional dawn services, asked people to stand at the end of their driveways with a candle instead.
I was working in an essential role (fresh food delivery), and my truck was the only vehicle on the roads as the sun came up. Driving in towards the CBD on Wynnum Road, almost every driveway had a small huddle of residents with flickering lights, standing in silent respect.
Each could likely only see a handful of others, but I was hugely privileged to see that these small groups of isolated families were a part of a vast network of people, all taking part in something truly communal, at a time of quarantine.
It still brings tears to my eyes to recall that.
